Welcome to ICoSSCE 2019

BACKGROUND

The rise of conservativism, populism and nationalism – through promoting more community-centric social goals, exclusive values, religious radicalism, strong patriotism and economic protectionism – have been widespread across societies in the today globalized world. The move has showed the change of the pendulum from the more liberal-individual, democratic, multicultural, tolerant and inclusive values; which had been once admired and pursued by left-centred politicians, civil society supporters as well as teachers and educators especially in the field of Social Studies Education (SSE). The shift of this societal change – leaned to the conservativist-cum-populist and nationalist ideas – have opened again the debates on both the goals and the way pursuing Social Studies Education (SSE) at primary-elementary and high schools as well as colleges and universities. The aim of SSE to facilitate students to learn ‘civic competences’ in the way exercising their citizenship status has been examined again either their relevance to the liberal-democratic, tolerant and multicultural values or the more harmonious and integrative-cohesive societies based on the strong communal-cum-religious morals.

The 2019 International Conference on Social Studies and Character Education (ICoSSCE 2019) invites students, teachers and researchers from across the diverse academic disciplines primarily to explore, elaborate, investigate and examine the impacts and responses to the rise of conservativism, populism and nationalism in teaching social studies in schools and colleges. Furthermore, the conference opens for other academic presentations, debates and discussions on the societal-political, cultural, economic and religious developments related to the issues; and the teaching-learning methodologies and innovations in the field of Social Studies Education and others (i.e the subject specific field of History, Citizenship, Moral-Character, Economics, Geography, Sociology, and Anthropology education) in response to the ongoing changes.
